Washington Square West ( Washington Square East see Society Hill) lies between 7th and Broad Streets, and between Walnut and South Streets. On its eastern boundary is Washington Square, one of William Penn's original parks, surrounded by townhouses and apartment buildings. Once a blighted area, redevelopment saw slow improvement, unlike that in Society Hill.
In the 1990s the beginning of gentrification occurred. The local name for the area bounded by Chestnut, Pine, Broad and 12th Street is the "Gayborhood". It is home to a large number of gay and lesbian bookstores, coffee shops. boutiques and bars.
Washington West has some of the nation's oldest art clubs on Camac Street--- the Avenue of the Artists. The Philadelphia Sketch Club, founded in 1860 was the first. It is also home to Thomas Jefferson Hospital and Antique Row.
