Natural catastrophe to natural wonders
Opportunity doesn't always knock. In the case of Amy and David Pollack, it crashed in their front yard.
Almost 10 years ago, Hurricane Floyd uprooted the enormous century-old beech tree that dominated the couple's traditional front lawn in Swarthmore. Today, that same space is a naturalistic landscape of soft lines and sweeping color, with a pond that rocks in spring with the kreek-eek, kreek-eek of frisky frogs looking for hookups.
Auctions: Americana aptly stars in a Fourth of July sale
Fourth of July auctions are not as popular as they once were, but there is at least one tomorrow out in central Pennsylvania that tops its predecessors, thanks to its theme: Patriotism and Americana.
By the beautiful bay
BRIGANTINE, N.J. - There is something a bit disorienting about standing at the front door of the Simpsons' home. The glass panels of the door allow a spectacular, straight-on view of a handsome boat, bobbing on the water, dead ahead. And that's the idea: The massive home unites with the bay, and suggests, even before one enters, that this is no ordinary seashore cottage.
Stop stressing, start entertaining
For the second year in a row, I was for sale. Well, not me exactly, but dinner with me. And not just dinner with me, worse - a dinner for eight (six plus my husband, Dan, and me) that I would cook.
Time to ...
Cut back perennials and annuals before going on vacation. They will branch and bud up while you're gone and, with luck, will be blooming on your return. Cut perennial salvia back after the first flush of blooms is over. You'll get a repeat performance in a few weeks. Likewise lavender, actually a subshrub.
Check for proper drainage
WASHINGTON - This rainy spring will be remembered as the season that gardens didn't need irrigation. Grass was lush; shrubs and trees stayed wet; ponds and outdoor planters didn't require topping off.

Your Place: Getting that deck cleaned, better late than never
Question: I know you've written many times about cleaning decks, but mine is looking kind of dingy and, because it sits on the north side of our house, is coated in mildew. The deck is gray, but the color is more greenish-black. Can you dig into your files and see if you can find your advice? I would have liked to have gotten it done for July 4. Maybe I'll get it done in time for Labor Day. Thanks.

Changing Skyline: Four visions for creating a green gem on the riverfront
Anyone who still believes that nothing changes in Philadelphia should have attended last week's Battle of the Architects at Festival Pier on the Delaware waterfront. The public event pitted four top landscape-design firms against one another for a chance to build a city park on a wildly overgrown finger pier at the foot of Race Street.
Garden Q&A
Question: How do I keep squirrels from eating my tomatoes?
Answer: This really is a wildlife question, and can get into Game Commission regulations, ethics, and all sorts of other knotty matters. (I once was chastised for recommending cayenne pepper to discourage squirrels because it irritates the squirrels or makes them violently sneeze or something like that.)
Cheat Sheet: Some factors to consider in picking a clothes dryer
I need to feed you a line - a clothesline, in this case, which, without fear of contradiction, remains the most energy-efficient way of drying laundry.
Auctions: The last of the Gloucester County glass
Although not as widespread as in Millville and Bridgeton in Cumberland County, South Jersey's glassmaking industry also flourished in Gloucester County, notably in Clayton, where the Clevenger Brothers Glass Works produced reproduction pieces from 1927 into the 1950s.
Studio adds photography to the glimmer of glass
It's not that the art of glassblowing doesn't get any respect. It's just that it never hurts to remind people that even if it's a bowl or an ashtray, it's still art.
