Society Hill History

zip code 19106  - Society Hill

Society Hill lies between Front Street on the east, 8th Street on the west, Lombard Street on the South and Walnut Street on the north. The 18th century Society of Free Traders, a London development company, had its offices on Front just above Dock Creek. The affluent citizens of the area built their brick houses here and frequented the local churches, markets and taverns. There are more early 18th and 19th century buildings here than anywhere else in the country.  By the time of the 19th century Philadelphians were moving to the west, and inevitable deterioration followed.

In the 1950s the federal government embarked on a program to preserve the architectural heritage of the United States. Many of the historic properties were sold to individuals who agreed to restore the exterior features of the houses. Where buildings had been razed, parks were created to blend with the 18th century ambience.  A high rise, Society Hill Towers, was also built, and young professionals came, sparking an interest in the area.

The proximity of so many of Philadelphia’s historic sites, cultural venues and the availability of fine dining all add to the desirability of  a residence in Society Hill.
