Roxborough Philadelphia History

Zip code 19128 - Roxborough

Roxborough is in Northwest Philadelphia. On the southwest, along the Schuykill River, lies Manyunk; to the northeast is the Wissahickon area of Fairmount Park, and to the southeast the boundary is East Falls. It was probably named for Roxburghshire in Scotland, the home of Andrew Robeson, an early settler.

For a long period, Roxborough had been a white middleclass neighborhood; however, gentrification is occurring, similar to that which is happening in Manayunk. Ridge Avenue cuts right through the town. It was named for the ridge running between the Wissahickon Creek and the Schuykill River. Development along Ridge Avenue has been inspired by similar retail successes in Manayunk.

Lower Roxborough, with its row homes built in the late 1800s, was originally a working class neighborhood. Upper Roxborough has more of an upscale nature, and houses have large lawns and garages. There are retail businesses nearby. Because of its high elevation, there are television, radio and cell phone towers on the hilly terrain.

Roxborough Philadelphia Homes for Sale

The price of the average Roxborough residence is $245,000. A two bedroom condo sells for $144,000 and a single row home is listed at $229,000. Proximity to Wissahickon Park and the vibrant night life atmosphere in neighboring Manayunk are definite plusses.
