Old City Philadelphia History

zip code 19106 - Old City

Old City is the heart of Philadelphia’s Historic District.  It is bordered on the east by Front Street, on the west by 6th Street, on the north by Vine Street and the south by Walnut Street. This is the area where American colonists established the business and governmental core of the city of Philadelphia. It was the original port area. It is home to Carpenters’ Hall, on Chestnut Street, the oldest trade guild building in the United States, where the Continental Congress was held in 1774 and where George Washington came as a delegate from Virginia.

In this area are Independence Hall, the Independence Visitor Center, the National Constitution Center the Liberty Bell Center and quaint Elfreth’s Alley, a microcosm of Colonial period housing. Independence Hall, begun in 1732, was originally known as the State House of the Province of Pennsylvania during Colonial times. Also in the vicinity is the site of a house once belonging to George Washington,  and an area where it is believed slave quarters once stood.

Go north for several blocks from Independence Square, and you will find the Betsy Ross House at 239 Arch Street. Old Christ Church, founded in 1695, stands at 2nd and Market Streets. This church was the place of worship of many notable Philadelphians, and the adjacent burial ground is the final resting place of Benjamin Franklin and four other signers of the Declaration of Independence.
