Mount Airy Philadelphia History

Zip code 19119 - Mount Airy

Mount Airy flows right into Germantown with no distinct demarcation. Historically they were both part of German Township. Bounded on the northwest by the Cresheim Valley, on the west by the Wissahickon Gorge, (which is part of Fairmount Park), on the southeast by Germantown, on the northeast by Stenton Avenue, Mt Airy was once considered a rural suburb of Germantown. Part of the Battle of Germantown was fought in Mt. Airy. Its name is derived from Mount. Airy Mansion which dates to 1750.

Mount Airy, as we know it today, grew in the late 19th and 20th centuries. The houses dating to the late 1900s are large ornate family homes with slate roofs, stained glass windows and elaborate decoration. The area is recognized as a model for racial integration. There is also a large Jewish community. West Mount Airy is considered an affluent, politically liberal neighborhood. Properties closer to Fairmount Park and Chestnut Hill are more expensive.

Mount Airy's proximity to King of Prussia and Plymouth Meeting are plusses for shoppers. Mount Airy has its own commercial district along busy Germantown Avenue, which is the boundary between East and West Mount Airy. Here you can find a variety of small boutiques and book stores.
