Manayunk Philadelphia History

zip code - 19127  Manayunk

Manayunk received its name from the Lenni Lenape Native American word, Manaiung, their name for the Schuylkill River beside which Manayunk is located.  Home of the first canal begun in the United States, the area was purchased from William Penn by the Levering family. Manayunk is bounded on the south by Ridge Avenue and the Wissahickon Creek, on the east by Pechin Street, Fountain Street on the north and the Schuylkill River on the west.

In the 1800s, the completion of a dam, canal and locks on the Schuylkill meant water power that was used to power mills and factories.  Thus began the industrialization of the area, and the influx of German, Irish, Italian and Polish immigrants as well as African Americans.  Neighborhood signs testify to the Italian presence today. Until the 1980s Manayunk was a prime manufacturing center. At that point is was fast becoming a depressed area.

With the 1990s came the opening of several upscale restaurants on Main Street. As visitors began to enjoy the village-like atmosphere of the place, the renovation of the ubiquitous row homes that had once belonged to the factory workers was underway. Shops, restaurants and bars proliferated, and Manayunk became a venue for a lively night life. The famous “Manayunk Wall”on Levering Street and Lyceum Street is part of the route of the renowned bicycle race, the Philadelphia National Championship. Manayunk offers a myriad of entertainment choices as well as cultural events.
