Logan Square Philadelphia History

Zip code 19103 - Logan Square

Logan Square is an area north of Market Street and South of Spring Garden Street. It is west of Broad Street and east of the Schuylkill River. It contains Penn Center and much of Center City's business district.

Logan Circle with its Swann Memorial Fountain is the crown jewel of the area. It was first called Northwest Square, one of William Penn's five original squares. Originally used as a place of execution and cemetery, it was renamed Logan Square in 1825, after James Logan, William Penn's secretary.

When the Parkway was designed, original plans called for a tall monument at the center of the traffic circle; instead a beautiful fountain was created in 1924 and called the Fountain of the Three Rivers, honoring Wilson Swann, late president of the Philadelphia Fountain Society. Alexander Calder, whose father created the statue of William Penn on City Hall tower, sculpted three figures: the Schuylkill as a woman, the Wissahickon Creek as a young maiden, and the Delaware River as a male figure.

Nearby are some of Philadelphia's most important attractions: the Franklin Institute, the Academy of natural Science, Moore College of Art and the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul. Fine dining and many cultural events attract an upwardly mobile population.
