Fishtown Philadelphia History
zip code 191125 - Fishtown
Fishtown is an up and coming neighborhood because of its proximity to Center City and its lively hometown atmosphere. Fishtown is a part of Kensington. Originally Philadelphia’s northern boundary was Vine Street, so in the early days this was a suburb of the city. Penn Treaty Park, where William Penn signed a treaty with the Lenni Lenape, the local Native Americans, is here. For many years this has been a predominately Irish neighborhood, and residents are fiercely proud of being “Fishtowners”.
This area along the Delaware River has been a place where families and their descendants have lived for generations. The late 1700s found fishermen living here and preparing shad, cod and pike which they sold throughout the city in pushcarts, hence the name. The 1830s saw the beginning of the ship building trade along the Delaware. William Cramp and Anthony Palmer opened a shipyard which was still producing ships during World War II, employing 18,000 workers. Until the 1960s Fishtown had four shipyards, a drydock, a sugar factory and a company that made baseballs.
