East Falls Philadelphia History

East Falls is a northwestern Philadelphia neighborhood that runs for only a few miles along the Schuykill River.  Its northeast boundary is Wissahickon Avenue.  It overlooks Kelly Drive, where joggers and bicyclists can be seen working out all year long. East Falls is developing rapidly with new housing and retail stores in the mix. East Falls is attempting to emulate Manayunk, with new restaurants, coffee shops and health clubs proliferating. East Falls was named for the old river rapids that existed before the building of Fairmount Dam. An early name was Falls of the Schuykill.

East Falls has been home to the Drexel University College of Medicine since 2003. This institution was born when the Medical College of Pennsylvania merged with Hahnemann Hospital. Hahnemann was founded in 1848; MCP opened in 1850 as Woman’s Medical College--- the first woman’s medical college in the world. East Falls also is the address for Philadelphia University; founded in 1844, it was once known as The Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science. The William Penn Charter School, a private day school, founded in 1689 by William Penn, has a forty-four acre campus in East Falls. East Falls is a predominantly white neighborhood with a 19.98 African American population.

In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries the Wissahickon Creek saw many water mills constructed, and industry flourished. At least two of the large companies located in the area built many of the row homes that still exist.  There are also large mansions that the industrialists lived in. Probably the most famous resident of East Falls was Grace Kelly, daughter of John B. Kelly and sister of John Jr., for whom Kelly Drive is named. Both father and son were world-renowned scullers. The Schuykill has long been a popular venue for boat races.
