Chinatown Philadelphia History

Zip code 19107 - Chinatown

Part of the Center City district, Chinatown runs from Arch to Vine Streets, and from 8th to 13th Street. Predominantly Asian in character, it is home to 1,000 people, most of whom are of Chinese descent; however, there are a few Vietnamese, Thai and Cambodian residents. The largest settlement of Vietnamese is now in South Philadelphia.

In 1870 a Chinese laundry appeared at 10th and Race Streets. The name "Chinatown" came into being in the late 1920s. When urban renewal began in the 1960s there was large destruction of the neighborhood as a result of construction of the Vine Street Expressway, the Pennsylvania Convention Center and Independence Mall. A neighborhood incorporation incentive gave residents an opportunity to influence local development. In the 1990s there was a successful opposition mounted to prevent the Phillies baseball team from building a stadium at 12th and Vine Streets. Philadelphia's growing downtown still continues to threaten the area. Many Asians have moved to Callowhill.

Chinatown attracts tourists with its elaborate "Friendship Arch" and restaurants with excellent Asian cuisine. The landmark Holy Redeemer Church sponsors many neighborhood services, including a private bus leaving on a regular basis for New York's JFK airport, which is provided by China Airlines.
