Bridesburg Philadelphia History

zip code 19137 - Bridesburg

Bridesburg is bordered by the bed of Frankford creek on the north and west, by Port Richmond to the southwest, the Delaware River to he southeast. Originally called Point-No-Point after a place on the mouth of Frankford Creek, it was founded in the early 1800s by Joseph Kirkbride who operated a ferry over the creek. A shorter form of his name was chosen for the town. The Lenni Lenape Indians originally inhabited the area. Swedes and Dutch followed.  Development occurred only after the arrival of William Penn.

Beginning in the late 1880s Bridesburg began to attract a large number of Eastern European immigrants, predominantly Polish and Lithuanians, who came to work in the industries along the Delaware River. Shipbuilding and other marine industries, including the Reading Railroad’s facilities at Port Richmond providing coal to steamships, and the Frankford Arsenal, which provided armaments during the First and Second World Wars, employed thousands of workers who lived close by in well-kept row houses.  Sunoco Chemical and Rohm and Haas were other companies that provided employment.

Bridesburg’s Polish heritage is still strong and vibrant.  Second and third generation families have refurbished their homes and have welcomed new immigrants. Stores and restaurants provide Polish ambience and food. St. John Cantius Church is a well-known landmark. Close to the Besty Ross Bridge, there is easy access to New Jersey.
