Art Museum Philadelphia History

Zip code 19130  - Art Museum and Fairmount

In 1811 Philadelphia moved its waterworks from its location where City Hall now stands to a new waterworks near the Schuylkill River.  Today you can see the lovely Greek Revival buildings that border the river which have been designated as a National Historic Landmark. These once housed the waterworks. The hill just beyond (where the Art Museum now stands) was called “Fairmount”.  It marks the end of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway.  Beyond lies Fairmount Park with its sprinkling of historic mansions set among gently rolling hills. Fairmount Park encompasses 8,900 acres with meandering creeks, and hikers’ trails. Fairmount is the world’s largest city park. It is home to “Boathouse Row” the group of Victorian structures that are club houses for the Schuylkill rowing clubs. These colorful buildings line the river just west of the Waterworks.

This section of Philadelphia starts west of Broad Street and lies between Spring Garden Street and Girard Avenue. To the north of the Parkway lies the Fairmount residential area. It is a lively middle class neighborhood with restaurants and bars. There are high rises on both sides of the Parkway, and museums like the Franklin Institute, the Rodin Museum, the Academy of Natural Sciences, as well as the Moore College of Art.
