Berks County, PA History

America’s original immigrants came in search of not only religious and political freedom, but also new economic opportunities. Pennsylvania was one of the places that had fertile land where families could settle and make a living. Berks County was blessed with a number of streams that made the building of water mills a real possibility. The presence of the navigable Schuykill River offered a means of transportation for farm and other products needed in the growing city of Philadelphia.

Swedes settled in the area beginning in1701 and were soon followed by French Huguenots, the Germans and the English. Welsh settled in the southwest of the county
There were small groups of Jewish settlers. Reading, originally a market town, became the center of the county’s urban area, which extends to Leesport in the north, Birdsboro in the east, Lancaster County in the south and Wernersville in the west.

From the Industrial Revolution on, Berks County became noted for its textile industry.  Probably the most important product of the county was iron. Steel mills were a large employer, and attracted European immigrants from Poland, Lithuania, Ukraine and other Slavic countries. Their presence was marked by the large variety of churches which were built by the various ethnic groups. Young people came from the coal regions to work in the mills.

After a period of slow economic growth Berks County is seeing positive changes in the job market. The three largest employers in the county are: health care, education and the retail trade. The Reading Outlet Centers attract a large number of customers from out of the area. The landmark Pagoda, which dominates the skyline, is another tourist attraction. Reading also has the Fairgrounds Farmers’ Market and several shopping malls.

Median price for a three bedroom home in $229,000. There are new condos and town homes in the $180,000 price range. Berks County’s proximity to Philadelphia’s attractions and to Penn National Race Track are real advantages. There has been an increase in new housing development, especially in the areas close to the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Individuals working in the Philadelphia area are finding property values much more to their liking in Berks County.
