There were small groups of Jewish settlers. Reading, originally a market town, became the center of the county’s urban area, which extends to Leesport in the north, Birdsboro in the east, Lancaster County in the south and Wernersville in the west.

Steel mills were a large employer, and attracted European immigrants from Poland, Lithuania, Ukraine and other Slavic countries. Their presence was marked by the large variety of churches which were built by the various ethnic groups. Young people came from the coal regions to work in the mills.

After a period of slow economic growth Berks County is seeing positive changes in the job market. The three largest employers in the county are: health care, education and the retail trade.
